NSHC Workforce Retraining Grants Summaries 1996 Grant Retrain workers at risk for layoff as PCAs. The grant was originally awarded to cross-train CNAs, EKGs and phlebotomists so they were multi-skilled PCAs who had all three skills. Since the demand for PCAs has waned, there is limited flexibility within this grant to train current workers in a position similar to a PCA but that doesn't require the exact same training requirements. More limited multi-skilled training can be considered. For example, CNAs or EKG Techs or Phlebotomists who need one additional clinical skill rather than two additional clinical skills could be considered. Current PCAs who need a skill enhancement, such as clinical data entry, or some other specific skill needed by the employer hospital, could be considered. Hospitals must agree to retain these retrained workers. Funding also includes staff replacement reimbursement. 1998 Grant Retrain the following workers: A) clerks, aides, assistants and technicians in data processing; B) nurses, social workers, patient care techs and others as case managers; C) supervising nurses in management skills, EKG, phlebotomy. Computer training offered through New Horizons (Commack NY) and includes, but is not limited to : Microsoft Work, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook. Programs not developed at this point. If there is significant interest, we'll proceed with developing these programs. Hospitals must agree to retain retrained workers. Staff replacement reimbursement is a possibility. 2000 Grant Retrain General RNs as: A) ICU nurses; B) operating room nurses: and C) retrain medical/lab techs as surgical techs. SUNY Stony Brook School of Nursing will provide training for all three projects. Training for ICU nurses is underway now, but classes repeat on a periodic basis. OR training also in progress. Surgical Technology Certificate Program began in January. Application deadline, third week in October. Hospital must agree to retain retrained workers. Funding also includes staff replacement reimbursement.
2002 Grant NSHC, on behalf of its member hospitals, filed a grant proposal for the 2002 round of workforce retraining funds. This grant is rather unique in its approach to the training and mentoring of new hospital RNs. It partners recently graduated RNs with nurse educators/managers and nursing faculty in an attempt to bridge or "transition" the new RN into his/her role. At the same time, this program updates the clinical skills of nursing faculty, which will enhance their teaching ability. Our academic partner is SUNY Farmingdale School of Nursing. The state has not made any award determinations for this round of funding at this time. |
